Concert and workshop with Mauro Squillante July 13-14

On 13th and 14th July 2024, The Moonlight Mandolin Orchestra (MMO) played host for a wonderful concert and workshop weekend in Cambridge, led by Italian mandolin virtuoso Mauro Squillante.

Mauro has a long-established relationship with the MMO, and last performed with us in December 2019. It was great to see him again and get his unique perspective on the Italian mandolin style!

We were also delighted to welcome a number of friends from other UK mandolin orchestras including The Fretful Federation (Brighton), the Bristol Guitar and Mandolin Ensemble, the Phoenix Mandolins (St Albans) and The Hornchurch Trio. They not only took part in the workshop, but also joined us for the concert itself (at St Luke’s Church in Cambridge), swelling the number of orchestra players to 28, which is a record for the MMO!

The MMO, as usual, played the first half of the evening, and Mauro joined us at the end of our set to take the solo part a performance of Vivaldiā€™s Concerto for Mandolin in C major. In the 2nd half of the evening he gave a solo rendition of a selection of works by J.S. Bach, as well as an “assembled suite” of works by composers from his native Naples.

The following morning most of us gathered again at the Storey’s Field Centre in Eddington. Mauro walked us through pieces by Mezzacapo and Gervasio – these were new repertoire for most of us, and much enjoyed – followed by a splendid lunch before we all said goodbye.

A very special weekend, and it will certainly not be the last time we work with Mauro!
