Xmas concert 2023

The Christmas Concert was a truly magical moment for the orchestra this year! With a programme focused entirely on seasonal tunes, delivered in the impressive setting of Histon Baptist Church, it was a window onto a world of festive music across the ages.
The programme started in Ukraine, with the heralding, ‘Carol of the Bells’, followed by a more contemporary moment from the USA with ‘The Christmas Song’, made famous as ‘Chestnuts Roasting’, by Nat King Cole among others. The timeless ‘Coventry Carol’ was followed by a version of ‘Cantique de Noel’, which, from a quiet start, swelled to an emotional high with the whole orchestra carrying the central motif through tremolo.
The second half ended with visions of South America and a distinctly warmer theme, with music from Jurg Kindle’s ‘Rio de Janeiro Suite’, delivered by the Moonshot Ensemble – a group of five players performing as a new entity.
A poignant moment  came after the interval when MMO leader, arranger and multi-talented musician, Hugh Boyde paid tribute with a moving version of ‘Fairy Tale of New York’ played solo on tenor guitar. The whole audience and the orchestra were stilled into silence as they listened to the beautiful arrangement.
More individual talents were showcased in the second half with violin players Annette Nelson and Mish Kelly leading the group through Corelli’s ‘Christmas Concerto’ and the traditional French carol, ‘Pat-a-Pan’ accompanied by the MMO’s Anne Sparrowhawk on snare drum.
Not only was the evening blessed with a large and appreciative audience, there were mince pies and mulled wine for all – not to mention the world premier release of the MMO new CD (buy one here 😉). All in all, an enjoyable and entertaining end to the year.  See you in January!
